How to Choose Wooden Doors for Apartments

Doors are one of the most-touched, most-seen elements of an apartment — and one of the first places cheap construction shows. Having manufactured and installed 7,650+ doors across just two of Pune's residential townships, here is how we'd guide a homeowner or builder through the choice.

1. Match the door type to the room

LocationRecommended constructionWhy
Main doorTeakwood or veneer-finished solid coreSecurity, first impression, takes carving and rich polish
Bedroom doorsPanel, veneer or laminate flushBalance of cost, look and durability
Toilet doorsWaterproof flush, WPC or laminateConstant moisture exposure — wood alone will swell
Balcony/utilityWPC or treated flushSun and rain exposure

2. Understand the material trade-offs

Teakwood is the premium choice: natural grain, excellent moisture resistance, carves beautifully, lasts decades — at the highest price. Veneer gives you real-wood surface on an engineered core at a fraction of teak's cost; it needs proper polishing (PU or Melamine) to protect it. Laminate is the most economical and lowest-maintenance: factory-pressed sheets, consistent colour, easy to clean — the standard for rental units and toilet doors.

3. The core matters more than the surface

Two doors can look identical on day one; the core decides how they look in year five. Ask what's inside: solid wood block board resists sagging and holds hinges firmly; hollow cores are lighter and cheaper but shouldn't be used for main doors or heavy-use rooms. For toilet doors, insist on waterproof (BWP-grade) cores.

4. Check the details that fail first

  • All six faces sealed — including top and bottom edges. Unsealed edges are the #1 cause of monsoon swelling.
  • Hardware quality — hinges and locks from reputed brands; a ₹200 hinge on a ₹15,000 door is false economy.
  • Frame material — the frame should match or exceed the shutter's moisture resistance.
  • Gap tolerance — 3–5 mm uniform gap; more means poor fitting, less means monsoon jamming.

5. For builders: specify once, verify at scale

On township projects the challenge isn't choosing one good door — it's getting the same quality on door #3,000 as door #3. That's why we manufacture on-site with our own machinery and team: one setup, one standard, verified floor by floor.

Frequently asked questions

Which wooden door is best for an apartment main door?

A teakwood or veneer-finished solid-core door is best for main doors — it offers security, premium looks and takes rich PU polishing. Ensure all six faces are sealed and hardware is from a reputed brand.

What is the best door for bathrooms in India?

Waterproof flush doors, WPC or laminate doors with BWP-grade cores are best for bathrooms, as they resist constant moisture without swelling.

Are laminate doors good quality?

Yes — quality laminate doors on solid cores are durable, low-maintenance and cost-effective. They are the standard specification for bedroom and toilet doors in most Pune residential projects.
