Why Doors Warp in Pune's Monsoon — and How to Prevent It

Every June, the same story across Pune: doors that closed perfectly in April now jam, scrape or won't latch. It isn't bad luck — it's physics, and it's preventable at the manufacturing stage.

Why it happens

Wood is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from humid air and expands. In monsoon, Pune's relative humidity jumps past 80%. A door with unsealed surfaces can gain enough moisture to expand several millimetres — more than the fitting gap left by the carpenter. Worse, if one face absorbs more than the other (say, a bathroom side vs a bedroom side), the door doesn't just swell — it warps into a curve.

The 5 manufacturing details that prevent it

1. Seasoned timber or engineered cores. Kiln-dried wood at 8–12% moisture content has already done most of its shrinking and swelling. Unseasoned "fresh" timber is the root cause of most warping complaints.
2. All six faces sealed. Most painters finish the front and back and skip the top, bottom and side edges — exactly where moisture enters. We seal every face including the hinge and lock cutouts.
3. Balanced construction. Both faces of the door should have the same laminate/veneer build-up. An unbalanced door (laminate one side, bare ply the other) curls like a bimetallic strip.
4. Correct fitting gap. 3–5 mm uniform clearance gives the door room to breathe seasonally without jamming.
5. PU or Melamine coating. A proper multi-coat polish system is a moisture barrier, not just decoration.

Minor swelling often settles after monsoon — resist the urge to plane the door in July, or you'll have gaps in December. If a door warps every year, the fix is usually re-sealing the edges or, for badly built doors, replacement with a balanced, sealed unit.
